Kids at Camp Rainbow SIBS Camp are empowered to deal with all of life’s challenges, while at the same time having fun and “just being kids.” Siblings of children diagnosed with cancer also experience a strong emotional and social impact. Siblings can often feel overlooked—as parents, caregivers and other family members turn their attention to treatment and other considerations that accompany a cancer diagnosis. Just as the child with cancer needs support, attention and care, so do their strongest supporters: their brothers and sisters.
The siblings at camp this year had a lot to say! During the therapeutic songwriting process, many stories, ideas, and emotions were shared among the campers. With assistance from the KRC music therapists, they composed their profound thoughts into beautiful and powerful lyrics. As heard in their original song, “Deeper,” the siblings expressed their own personal experiences. Throughout the songwriting process, each participant had a story to tell and wanted to share it with listeners. In the opening of the song, they want you to “Listen up!”
The song by these Rock Stars is not only impressive, but genuinely heartwarming. Being a kid is supposed to be easy and fun. Yet these siblings realize there are certain variables in their lives, over which they have no control. This can leave a child feeling many different ways. In a KRC session, it’s all about independence. They have the power to create something authentic and inspirational, and they can call it their own. The music therapists are there to support, guide and help this process along the way.
“Deeper”
Hey, listen up!
We got this feeling in our hearts that we can’t let go
We got a story to tell and you need to know
Feeling left out; it’s a really bumpy road
Even though it’s hard, we carry this load
We’re swimming in cold water and we can’t get out
Deeper and deeper, I’m starting to have doubts
My world is upside down
I’m trying to swim up
Water’s all around
Water’s all around
We got this feeling in our hearts that we can’t let go
We got a story to tell and you need to know
Feeling left out; it’s a really bumpy road
Even though it’s hard, we carry this load
I hear muffled voices calling my name
I see a light above, to the surface I came
Support is all around
I know I’m not to blame
I know I’m not to blame
I know I’m not to blame
We got this feeling in our hearts that we can’t let go
We got a story to tell and you need to know
Feeling left out; it’s a really bumpy road
Even though it’s hard, we carry this load
We carry this load
We carry this load
